Biography

Dr. David R. Porter has served as Professor and Head of the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences since August 2007. He leads a large, dynamic group of OSU faculty, staff, and students dedicated to provide the research, teaching, and extension products and services needed to meet the needs of Oklahoma and the Nation for food, feed, fiber, and fuel. Before coming to OSU, Porter served as Supervisory Research Geneticist with the Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Porter earned his BS and MS in agronomy from Oklahoma State University and his PhD in agronomy from Texas Tech University.

On Biotechnology

How does agricultural biotechnology contribute to solving the world's need for more food, water, and fuels?

We need to produce more products with fewer inputs. The tools of agricultural biotechnology will allow us to keep pace with the increasing demands for more food, feed, fiber and fuel in the most efficient manner possible.

Why should the public and policymakers care about agricultural biotechnology?

An educated and informed public will understand the many benefits of agricultural biotechnology and will, in turn, demand that policymakers take a more balanced, scientific-based approach toward oversight of this valuable new industry.

Where will the field of agricultural biotechnology be in 10 years?

I believe we will see fantastic new breakthroughs that will revolutionize the way we produce food, feed, fiber and fuel. Agricultural biotechnology will be recognized by all as a safe, effective way to meet the needs of our growing population.
