Biography

Dean Kleckner, Truth About Trade & Technology Chair, served seven two-year terms as president of the American Farm Bureau Federation. Before becoming AFBF president, he was president of the Iowa Farm Bureau for ten years. He served on the American Farm Bureau's board of directors during that time. Mr. Kleckner owned and operated a 350-acre family farm near Rudd, Iowa - raising corn, soybeans and hogs.

Agricultural biotechnology is one of the tools that can be used to increase crop yields with direct yield traits and preventing loss from pests and weeds. New traits that including drought tolerance and efficient use of nitrogen will be key.

Why should the public and policymakers care about agricultural biotechnology?

We all eat - we all want to feed our families. Ag biotech is a sustainable solution that allows farmers to do produce the food we eat more efficiently and abundantly.

Where will the field of agricultural biotechnology be in 10 years?

In just 10 years, we went from the first commercialiation to over 1 billion acres planted. Biotech will help us feed and fuel a growing global population while adding new nutritional attributes to the food we want.
