Think of yourself buying a cucumber and peeling it only NOT to find cucumber inside but a banana. Seems impossible? Well, say hello to the power of biotechnology which can do anything and everything.

Some of the earliest biotechnologists were the farmers who developed advanced species of plants and animals with a simple process-cross pollenization or cross breeding.

It has been estimated that in the coming years, biotechnology will be greatly influencing OUR lives.

The various fields of biotechnology are witnessing wondrous achievements. This is a fair roundup of prominent fields in biotechnology.

Agricultural Biotechnology

Agricultural Biotechnology is used to improvise microorganisms, plants and animals.

This branch of biotechnology deals with genetic engineering, molecular markers, molecular diagnosis, vaccines and tissue culture.

With the help of DNA tests, scientists measure and develop solutions so that agricultural productivity can be enhanced.

This helps to improve the quality of new crops and livestock with the end goal being the improvement in quality of agricultural livestock.

The quest to improve the quality of crops and livestock has been on for a very long time. However, with agricultural biotechnology it is slowly turning into reality.

As a part of the process, the genes of the nutritional plants are transferred to the other plants so the end result is even better in terms of the nutritional value.

Medical Biotechnology

The field of medical biotechnology makes the use of living cells and cell materials to enable them for research and to produce pharmaceutical elements. These elements would then help in prevention and treatment of human diseases.

In short, medical biotechnology assists with the diagnosis of diseases so that they can be cured. This can be done by development of medically useful products and antibiotics.

Animal Biotechnology

Animal Biotechnology deals with building transgenic animals to increase meat or milk production. It also provides new tools and techniques for improving human and animal health so that they are resistant to diseases.

Mainly, animal biotechnology focuses on improving an animal’s impact on the environment.

Doctors aim to deal with in vitro fertilization of egg so that the embryo can be transferred to the womb of the female animals for better productivity and development.

On the whole, this field of biotechnology aims at improving the food we eat and the impact of an animal impact on the environment. Majorly, it focuses on the ability to prevent diseases while taking care of animal welfare.

Forest Biotechnology

Forest Biotechnology is conducted to understand better the diverse organisms that live in the forests. The aim is to genetically manipulate organisms so that they are molded to increase tree population.

In this process, a few genetically superior trees are selected and grown. This aims at the enhancement of the quality of trees and other forest living beings.

With the growing population and pollution, we also need to make sure enough trees are present.

Through forest biotechnology, the society and the environment both will be at the benefit.  Advanced tree breeding technologies like cross between trees belonging to different plant families would make sure that the next few years would be a time of expansion.

The aim is to grow quality trees to protect our future generations and fulfil their increasing demand.

Industrial Biotechnology

Industrial biotechnology has originated as we have slowly realised the need for pollution prevention, resource conservation and cost reduction.

It involves the commercial production of organic substances and antibiotics with the use of microorganisms.

Industrial Biotechnology makes the use of living cells like bacteria, yeast and algae to generate industrial products and processes.

Substances like acetic acid, acetone, glycerine, citric acid, penicillin, and mitomycin are commercially produced with the use of fungi and bacteria.

In the coming few years, industrial biotechnology would have an impact that would change the way we protect markets.

Environmental Biotechnology

One of the most promising and resourceful sub-fields of biotechnology is Environmental biotechnology which focuses on pollution prevention, cost reduction and resource conservation.

The various agendas covered in this field include detoxification of waste, treatment of sewage and control the spread of diseases by using virus, fungi and bacteria agents.

Environmental Biotechnology is mainly used to study the natural environment and find out solutions for sustainability.

Plant Biotechnology

The field of plant biotechnology involves a combination of tissue culture and genetic engineering. It deals with the development of transgenic plants that would resist stress, embryo rescue, crypto preservation, etc.

Plant biotechnology is a speedy way of improving crop plantation. It helps in the making of distant crosses that are practically feasible.

Biotechnology IS the Future!

Biotechnology has helped to make our lives comfortable, our environment cleaner, our bodies healthier and our food better.

Graduation in Biotechnology is the perfect option for Class 12 students who are interested in this vast field.

Here is a fun fact: You are not that special- About 99.9% of your DNA is exactly the same as others around you. It is the other 0.1% codes that have made us so different.

So basically, biotechnology is working only for that other 0.1%. Woah! Isn’t that great? I can’t even imagine what the future would be with the huge change biotechnology is set to bring in our lives, that too with just 0.1% of our DNA.

I am super excited for the future, are you?
